Old Computers ? Recycle

Need to get rid of an old computer? Recycle!

Each year, millions of people get new computers. Problem is, they still have an old one sitting on their desk. The first thing they do is stick the old one in their basement or garage, which eventually leads them to simply tossing it into the trash at some point.

Rather than just moving it to the garage or basement, where it creates clutter, or putting it in the trash, where it can cause environmental and human health problems, opt for proper disposal. Getting rid of old appliances is simple when you use a recycling service. Plus, choosing to call a recycling service means you are doing your part to help protect the planet.

It may be easy to simply toss the old computer into a trash bin for disposal and send it to the landfill. But did you realize that, while it is there, it poses a human health risk? Computers sitting in landfills end up emitting toxic substances such as flame retardants, lead, mercury, cadmium, and beryllium. The substances eventually make their way into water supplies and thus into humans. Once in the bloodstream, they can wreak havoc on a person’s hormonal balance.

When you recycle your computer instead of putting it in a landfill, things such as the metal, copper, plastic and glass, among other substances, can be broken down and re-used. In addition to disposal of your old computer, you can do the same with other appliances, such as printers, scanners and fax machines.

Our junk removal recycling service caters to both residential and commercial needs. Contact us and we will gladly pick up your old computer, or other appliances and junk, and provide proper disposal by recycling it, rather than sending it to a landfill. In 2010, make it a point to be green. Start by recycling your old computer!

It's coming!

If you haven't already heard, the Green Bin is coming to Ottawa!

The Green Bin program has been up and running in thousands of communities over the past several years now and starting in January 2010, the citizens of Ottawa will be included.

Capital Junk is very excited about the arrival of these bins to local residences across the city.  It is another way we can all become involved in an environmental program and make a difference!

The Ottawa Green Bin program is a recycling program which takes food waste and turns it into compost for agricultural use.  By using the green bin we are helping the city feed the land, and not our landfills.

Delivery of the green bin will take place between September and December 2009.  Curbside collection will then commence January of next year on your regular garbage collection day.

One particular peice of information we just became aware of and find very exciting is that the materials collected will be processed at 'Orgaworld', a large, state-of-the-art composting facility located right here in Ottawa where the green waste is converted to useable compost.

Items you can place in the green bin range from vegetables and fruits, tea bags and sauces to yard waste and even kitty litter..we will all soon have an eco-friendly option to dispose of so many day-to-day household materials that just end up in landfills.

Capital Junk cares for the environment and is committed to supporting it by ways of reusing and recycling the junk we collect in order to keep items out of local landfills.  To know that Ottawa residences will soon have another way to help the environment and another way to help reduce the materials put into our landfills, is very exciting to us and we hope you too will pitch in and make the green bin a success!

*For more details on the collection of green bin waste, check your 2009-2011 Collection Calendar.

Cleaning Up The Capital

Last week Capital Junk was proud to volunteer and take part in

One area we chose to do our part was at 'Sarsaparilla Trail' located in the Stony swamp conservation area. The staff came across a lot of junk through the wooded areas as well as along the shoreline. We found everything from old beer bottles to broken lawns chairs. It turned out to be a wonderful experience for the Capital Junk Team and we all had a great time lending a hand in cleaning up one of Ottawa’s great bird watching parks!
Capital Junk is a supporter of our local community and proud to be servicing our Nation's Capital. It is in our ongoing efforts to not only help the environment and keep junk out of landfills but to also help in maintaining the cleanliness of this beautiful city!
We are looking forward to participating again next Spring!

It's in the air...

As we move farther into the month of October, the chilly mornings and smell of winter in the air reminds us even more that the snow will be falling soon.

As much as many of us are not thrilled about the idea of all that cold, white stuff appearing across the city, it does make us start to think about wanting to be able to park our car in the garage during those winter months.

However, for this to happen for many of us it requires clearing out some of that old junk before there is room to park a vehicle.

If you have a friend, family member, neighbor or even yourself who's garage has been taken over by piles of unwanted items and would like the ability to park a vehicle in the garage during those cold, snowy months, have them call Capital Junk or conveniently go online to capitaljunk.ca to schedule an appointment for removal.

A team will arrive on site, give an upfront quote and will then quickly and efficiently haul and load all their items out of the garage and onto the truck and then take them away to dispose of properly.

But don’t wait too long; winter is just around the corner!

Capital Junk believes not all junk is garbage and we work hard at finding ways to keep your unwanted items out of our local landfills!

Better Than Bins

Often we receive phone calls and emails from potential customers inquiring about renting a disposal bin, also known as dumpsters.

Capital Junk is a full-service junk removal company and our bins are fixed to our trucks therefore unable to drop-off and pick back up.

In many ways we are similar to a disposal or dumpster bin in terms of what we can help you dispose of - however we offer you so much more value!

Here are a few reasons why Capital Junk is better than a bin rental....

1. Lower costs - We only charge for the space (or volume) you use where as you are normally
charged for the entire bin wether you use the space or not with a drop-off.

2. Environmentally Friendly - Capital Junk is committed to recycling and reusing the items collected and keep as much as 70% from landfills. Many rental bin companies do not practice this.

3. All labour is included - Our full-service includes the hauling, loading and clean-up of your items or materials. When renting a bin the customer is responsible for filling
it themselves.....we do it for you!

The next time you are considering a bin rental, keep these points in mind when making your decsion and what works best for you.

Please call or send us an email at info@capitaljunk.ca with any questions regarding our service or to set-up an appointment for a quick and hassle free pick-up at a time convenient for you!

Who knew?

As many of you know, Capital Junk is a full-service junk removal company who believes in helping the environment.
We donate a large portion of the items we collect to local Ottawa Chariites and recycle many materials such as metal, cardboard, paper, plastic and even car tires that we pick-up from homes and offices.

Recently aother way Capital Junk is trying to make a difference is by switching the type of fuel used in their trucks. Its called 'Bio-Diesel' and can be easily purchased right here in our community at Topia Greenstop.
Who knew an 'environmentally friendly fuel' was available so close to home? Although it is still new to Ottawa and the number of depots to purchase it is limited, the price is comparable to regular diesel and more importantly, it doesn't have the negative effects other fuel emissions do on the air we all breath!

A Messy Situation...

Just recently there was some fairly severe flooding in a local community near Ottawa. With the abundance of rain we've been recieving its not surprising we got the email we did.

A few evenings ago we received an email from a frantic homeowner in Kanata, Ontario explaining that her home was affected by the recently flooding earlier that day. The flooding occured in the customer's basement and several contents were damaged by it. You could tell she was very upset and needed immediate help. She had also mentioned that a family member who lived in the home was allergic to mould and wanted to be sure this situation was taken care of quickly.

We were happy to shuffle our day around to accomodatet the family. Our crew arrived shortly after 8 am the next morning and within a few short hours had the damaged contents removed and the mess cleaned up.
The family was very thankful and very pleased wtih the prompt and professional response they received from Capital Junk. As well, they appreciated the caring manner in which our staff used during their visit.

Capital Junk would like to offer a 15% discount to anyone who was affected by the recent flooding in Kanata and Stittsville. Please give our office a call at (613) 825-0707 and a customer service representative will be happy to assist you!
